TWO
FEATURED SONGS FOR MARCH AND APRIL
Check
out David's latest "TALES FROM HOME"
in which he discusses some recent session work he's done as well as a Tonight
Show appearance last October with James Taylor.

Our
FEATURED SONGS for March and April are "Meant For You" from David's EXPECTATIONS
OF LOVE and "Look at the Clock" by his 1960s group, The Utopias,
with David on the lead vocal from BACK
TO BLUE-EYED SOUL.
"Meant
For You," written by David and Roxanne Seeman, features David Benoit on
keyboards.
Here
are David's liner notes comments about "Look at the Clock":
This
song is believed to have been written by Pam Sawyer and Lori Burton. It
would have been the fourth and final single from The Utopias (David Lasley,
Julie Lasley, Joan Hughes). Sadly, it was never released, even though it
was our best produced record. Joan left the group to get married, my sister
Julie went back to high school and I concentrated on songwriting. "Look
at the Clock's" 1967 session took place at Terra Shirma on Livernois Avenue
in Detroit. Various Motown players contributed, including either Babbit
or Jamerson on bass, Jack Ashford on percussion, the Andantes on additional
background vocals, either Dennis Coffey or Ray Monette on guitar, and Chuck
Forrest on drums. It was engineered by Milan Bogden and/or Russ or Ralph
Terrana and produced by Carl Cisco and Roger Bass.

LISTEN
TO "YOU BRING ME JOY," OUR FEATURED SONG FOR FEBRUARY FROM DAVID'S SOLDIERS
ON THE MOON CD
-
NEW
"TALES FROM HOME" COMING SOON
Our
FEATURED SONG for February is "You Bring Me Joy," one of David's most popular
and well-known songs. He wrote it in 1978, and it was recorded by Norman
Connors and most notably in a highly regarded and celebrated recording
by Anita Baker on her Rapture
album. It was also featured on The
Best of Anita Baker, released in June of last year.
David
himself recorded "You Bring Me Joy" for his DEMOS
album and again for SOLDIERS ON
THE MOON, the 1990 version you hear here. This track features David
on lead vocal, with backgrounds by Luther Vandross (who did the background
vocals arrangement), Arnold McCuller, Myrna Smith, Priscilla Coolidge and
others. Musicians include David Benoit on piano, Gregg Karukas on keyboards,
Jeff Porcaro on drums, Abe Laboriel on bass, Bob Mann and Marty Walsh on
guitar and Luis Conte on percussion.

our SOUNDS page to hear the song.

TO OUR
FEATURED
SONG FOR JANUARY
FROM
DAVID'S
SOLDIERS
ON THE MOON CD
Our
FEATURED SONG for January is David's critically acclaimed cover of Carole
King's "It's Too Late" from his SOLDIERS
ON THE MOON CD. Originally released in 1990, SOLDIERS was
re-issued with 5 bonus tracks in 2000 by Cool Sound, which also re-issued
David's DEMOS and LAST DANCE (Rosie).
The
re-issued SOLDIERS features all 11 original tracks plus four alternate
takes (of "Soldiers on the Moon," "It's too Late," "Without the One You
Love," and "Warm as the Wind") and a new track called "This is Real." Musicians/background
vocalists on this highly regarded and sought-after recording include David
Benoit, Luis Conte, Rita Coolidge, Bob Mann, Arnold McCuller, Jeff Porcaro
and Luther Vandross.
Of
SOLDIERS
ON THE MOON, the NEW YORK TIMES said:
"The
presence of Luther Vandross, who did the vocal arrangements, can be felt
all over a record whose diaphanous textures and languid tempos echo the
ultra-romantic style of Vandross? own albums. The outstanding cut is a
dreamy extended rendition of arole King and Toni Stern's 'It's Too Late.'"

DAVID IN JAMES TAYLOR'S BAND ON NEWLY RELEASED DVD AND VHS OF THE 2001
"PULL OVER" TOUR CONCERT
Visit
our SOUNDS page to hear David's
rendition of "Hot Butterfly" (the Featured Song for November and December),
from his BACK TO BLUE-EYED SOUL
retrospective CD. Here are David's liner notes comments about this song:
Taken
from a rough cassette mix, this is a very rare, obscure version given to
me by Gregg Diamond (Bionic Boogie) on the day it was recorded in New York
City. A few weeks earlier, I had worked on Gregg's entire Hot Butterfly
album (with Luther Vandross and Cissy Houston). I'd come back to the studio
straight from a vacation in Michigan to sing the lead vocal for one more
song, "Paradise," which became a disco hit in 1978. My 16-year-old cousin
Carolyn and my 16-year-old nephew Mark were with me on their first visit
to the city. I barely made it to the session on time because our plane
was delayed out of Detroit Metro Airport, so I brought Carolyn and Mark
along. After "Paradise" was done, Brad Baker (the horn arranger), Geoff
Diamond (the engineer) and Gregg suggested I take a crack at the "Hot Butterfly"
lead vocal. Luther had already recorded it and had done a beautiful job,
but since my cousin and nephew were there -- and I could "show off" a little
-- I decided to go for it. I will never forget the surprised and awed looks
on their faces as they watched me sing. This performance is definitely
one of my favorites, and it certainly includes the highest (recorded) notes
I've sung. It's a wild one, but so were all the great Bionic Boogie records.

David,
Arnold McCuller, Kate Markowitz and Valerie Carter are the featured background
vocalists in the James Taylor 2001 "Pull Over" Tour concert that has just
been released on DVD and VHS. (This aired in September on pay-per-view
TV.)
The
DVD and VHS include bonus features about James Taylor and 25 songs from
the concert: Everyday, That's Why I'm Here, Only One, Frozen
Man, On The 4th Of July, Whenever You're Ready, Raised Up Family, Mexico,
Steamroller Blues, Carolina In My Mind, Millworker, Sun On The Moon, Junkie's
Lament, Copperline, Shed A Little Light, Fire And Rain, You've Got A Friend,
Your Smiling Face, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), Traffic Jam, Knock
On Wood, You Can Close Your Eyes, and Sweet Baby James.
