THANKS
FOR ALL THE "ASK DAVID" QUESTIONS
David's
special "TALES FROM THE ROAD -- REPORTS
FROM THE JAMES TAYLOR TOUR" begins today. "Tales," posted every other
week, features David's descriptions of his experiences during the four-month,
50+-city tour, including performances, meeting fans, visiting his favorite
places in the different cities, and random observations. There will occasionally
be "guest reports" by other James Taylor band members, and we'll also be
adding photos soon.

In
keeping with the James Taylor "theme" these days, our FEATURED SONG for
June on our SOUNDS page is David's
"Got To Find Love" (from his acclaimed MISSIN' TWENTY GRAND album)
on which you can hear James Taylor's distinctive background vocals.
In
a March 1999 live chat on the James
Taylor Online web site, David explained how James came to sing on his
album. Here is a portion of the transcript:
WEBMASTER
- I know at times the tables have turned, and the folks you sing backup
for do the same for you. What was it like having James Taylor sing backup
for you on your album?
DAVID
- Amazing! It was interesting how it happened. It was August of '81, and
we were leaving for the Japanese tour with JT. I casually told him that
I was making this record and sort of half asked him to be a part of it,
and never mentioned it again. In October, when we got back to L.A. after
Japan, James mentioned that he had a session for Joni Mitchell for her
Wild
Things Run Fast album. He asked me, "And when do you want me to sing
for you?" I was completely amazed that he remembered...
WEBMASTER
- I guess he didn't have to ask twice?
DAVID
- No, he didn't (laughs). And the funny part was that I was in A&M's
studio A, and Joni was in B or C, so all he had to do was walk across the
hall!

-
WEB
SITE UPDATES
David's
BACK
TO BLUE-EYED SOUL is spotlighted in the May 18, 2001, issue of GOLDMINE
magazine.
See our REVIEWS page for the text.
GOLDMINE
is a popular national magazine featuring articles and interviews on recording
stars past and present and collectible records, CDs, and music memorabilia
covering rock & roll, blues, country, folk, and jazz.

Check
out "Back In The Woods" from BACK TO BLUE-EYED SOUL, the featured
song for May on our SOUNDS page.
As
mentioned in GOLDMINE magazine (above), this is a hard-to-find track
from 1967 by David and his group The Utopias. David's comments on this
song (from the liner notes of BACK TO BLUE-EYED SOUL) are as follows:
"Recorded for the B side of "Look
at the Clock," this song features my lead vocal, with [my sister] Julie,
another Utopias member named Barbara, me and, possibly, Rose Simpson on
background vocals. It is a cappella, except for ?Bongo? Eddie, whose real
name is Eddie Brown. We made it with no rehearsal at Terra Shirma in Detroit,
probably on four track.
Written by my late older sister, Judy Nash,
the late Roger Bass, Julie and me, it's about the double lives we led as
country farm kids going to the city, performing in nightclubs and on TV,
becoming local stars there, and going back to our small town and being
completely misunderstood. That's how Julie and I felt: very understood
in the city and very misunderstood in the country.
This song was recorded in 1967, the year before
Laura Nyro's second album. Laura was probably my greatest inspiration,
and, interestingly, "Back in the Woods" is very similar to some of her
songs that I had not yet heard! Although Laura grew up in the city subways,
and I grew up in the cow pastures, we both loved girl groups and doo-wop.
Isn't it strange and wonderful"

A
message from David....
I would like to take
this time to sincerely thank you for your support of DavidLasley.com. This

Lasley Sings Laura Nyro" recording (possibly to be called "Broken Rainbow"),
and another recording I'm planning to do of my favorite works from theatre
and film composers like Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Galt MacDermot,
Burt Bacharach, Peter Link, Will Holt and others.
And, of course, I'm really looking
forward to the summer tour with James Taylor, which begins June 1 (see
below). Watch for my "dispatches" from the road here on the site (and via
email for our mailing list members), and I'll try to meet as many of you
as I can over the summer.
